Projects
Project 1
I plan on doing a sound project involving DJ live performance as well as music/sound production. First I am planning a collaborative live set for Sept. 16th at SFAI for new students. Mixing contemporary hip-hop and dance records and my own remixes with old records using 4 turntables and 2 digital vinyl interfaces. This performance bends lines between genres of different types of (at least semi-danceable) music. This live project stems off of a mixtape project Raf Canedo and myself embarked on a few months ago.
Throughout the semester I will further explore the original re-mixtape project that we had already started. Combinations of music, beat mixing, turntablism, hip-hop history, sample references. I hope to also find new digital and web based venues for playing our final composition.
I also want to explore more narrative sound work that works with my semi narrative drawing work. I have a spider man record that comes with a comic book, or a spider man comic book that comes with a record. I’d like to make something like that too. I have a lot of freestyle doodles that almost tell stories and I’d like to make similar pieces with sound. Making funky narratives that link up to the drawings by collaging found sound sampled elements from records, movies, and the web. Some inspirations/sample materials for this project (besides the spider man record book) are Madlib’s (Quasimoto) use of sound and voice samples, Rap skits in between songs on albums, Santiago Marcial’s and my collaborative comic series, good comics, my music library, humor, improvisation and experimentation in general...Beeping when its time for you turn the page.
That all said, I am down to learn new stuff, put all this on hold and do something in a whole new direction. I am interested in experimental sound and learning about its history. I am interested in incorporating more digital stuff into my vinyl record world. More technical stuff, learning new software stuff. Sound for film that I can work into my film classes.
new idea make a song that changes everyday. This could be open to the public or group of artists to contribute and make it evolve. It may need software that would allow people to easily take the song file off the web and add new layers (protools style?) And upload it again.
- This is a great idea Darby! Algorithmic audio that always is changing is completely interesting and a new approach. You should check out www.generative.net and the projects associated with that site, as one of the approaches of generative audio is building systems which, well, "generate" content such as audio. Also, I like your other ideas above like dealing with the segments in between rap songs. I find them often quite annoying, yet must have some draw to the community of listeners. I think it would be great for you to focus on developing several of these ideas in tandem. It seems like making a song that changes all the time could incorporate these interludes, etc. --Jon.
word.
Ok so I saw that NIN put out a song in garage band format. At first I'm like thats cool, then i'm thinking, how can a song made on garage band be any GOOD?! (I'm downloading it now so i'll see, but i think they translated the studio multitracks to garageband format, they didn't actually use the garage band horn library or anything)
NIN's website has links to lots of remixes people made. (CCmix note to Jon, check out http://www.nin.com/access/only/garageband/userlicense.asp for the copyright contract you agree to before downloading the garage band file)
NIN has fans already, I do not. But I just listened to the garage band song and it sucks. i'd like to put some of my never ending protools sessions that i can't seem to complete to a greater infinite use on the web than they would with a "finished" cd. Or maybe its a means to ge a finished CD somehow.
It would be dealing with pop music and contemporary hip-hop, at a time when by the time an album officially drops the songs are already played out cause of the radio, mixtapes, the internet and bootlegs. A generative webnetwork would allow things like kanye west saying "goerge bush doesn't care about black people" to be incorporated that day and be collaged out of recognition by the time its played out. I think the radio is a pretty good model atleast for a one way creative flow from deejay/producer to the listener. A radio station on series of shows has no middle or end, rather than being an artifact or document of cultural discrourse, it is one of the discourses means and is constantly evolving.
The problem would be catching up with all the remixes already being posted and for it to sufficiently intermingle with already existing remix web communities, like jon said, this internet music thing is happening from the underground up, it seems almost impossible to capture that or to try to start some larger network to that would encompass all of the free cool stuff thats happening on the internet all the time..
Maybe it could start by posting a very sought after acapella vocal track and watch people create the beat for it or cut it up... Is this just a rip off of CCmixer? Hmmmm...
Much like the DADA drawing game exquisit corpes, where one persone draws the head, the next person draws the middle and someone else draws the feet, but the feet keep going! Only its music, and time is a factor, and maybe all the previous versions could be made available. It could sound like a long ass deejay set trading off deejays, only its produced (double d and stienski studio mega mix records), so lots of layers and things can be done that couldn't be done live, like messing with the begining of the set much later on.
DINGO's INSTALATION IDEA
- 1 SHe wants to make a poopoo machine that makes, POO! And it shoots Nair on people! and... well actually this poop machine is a little different... i want to make a robotic turd that will move like a worm, make move back and worth. the concept of this is that i think most people have a fear of of just visually seeing it, beng in the same room as it, stepping on it, or even just picking it up when you take your dog on a walk, but in some sense you are the one in control, you can avoid these situations but now the tables are turned and now the mother fucker can move!
- 2 to have an realistic animation that will make you feel that its there. this will be captured by have projectors or something else, haven't quite figured it out yet, but a whole bunch of different frames of an action that wound take place on the ground like a walking dog os something... all of these images will all be place in specific spots and soemthing like a special cloth or board...not quite sure yet but it will move under these frames to capture them. a strobe light might an option to get these moving but it would be ideal to not use a strobe light.
