The Hybrid Open-Closed Project: Building Open Media Sharing Communities with Open Projects and Corporations
This presentation focuses on experiences learned from starting out as an Open Source developer in Inkscape (inkscape.org) and Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org), then getting a job at Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org), and then merging both models of development together to form open working projects with external organizations like Google, Yahoo and others.
How do these closed and open models interact and how is Open effecting collaboration when you have to indoctrinate your peers at the office in order to lubricate the wheels of Open-ness? How can the ideas of Free Culture be applied to other areas outside of software engineering at your day job?
Specific emphasis in this talk is placed on practical working examples such as ccHost media sharing software behind ccmixter.org, the ccMarking project and CC's involvement in the OLPC project. And, how can you maintain your level of productivity with your day job while also getting paid to work on your Open Source projects.
