- Work in a team
- Meet deadlines
- Work with shifting schedules and goals from client
Tangible
- Design and Produce DVD for Leonardo
- Design cover for Leonardo Special Issue
- Design look and feel for special article about our project
- Design and Produce DVD for mediaexperiment.org #5
- One semester-long project on making mediaexperiment.org successful
Summary
Leonardo Magazine, with educational partners, the Center for New Media UC Berkeley and SFAI, are co-producing a DVD in connection with the 2006 Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (ISEA) International Symposium on Electronic Art and ZeroOne San Jose for the pre-ISEA2006 New Media Pacific Rim Summit. This DVD and accompanying booklet will be packaged with the print version of Leonardo to be released next year.
Students selected for the Practicum will produce and design both the content on the DVD and its external packaging. This includes internally the interface that includes menus, clips and other dynamic content, and externally the design of the packaging, a small booklet and associated text. Additionally, a trailer for the web composed of DVD excerpts will be produced.
Those accepted for the Practicum should be familiar with Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, and DVD Studio Pro. Students should also be highly motivated to work collaboratively on a DVD design project, be able to work with deadlines, and take direction. An interview will be required prior to registration. Students will receive published versions of the DVD for their portfolio.
- THIS IS NOT FOR ISEA! IT IS ONLY FOR THE pacific rim new media summit (2 day summit, pre-ISEA)
- summit has 7 working groups
- project wiki is on socialtext.org (curatorial, organizations, etc) - Jon Phillips has access to this wiki if anyone needs on it.
- The issue of Leonardo we are working on will include:
- Each working group will have approx. 8-10 printed pages in the Leonardo issue dedicated to their topic. To help you figure out how much material you need, a printed page in the journal is around 1,000 words. An illustration is usually around 1/4 page. So, for example, an article of 3,000 words and 4 illustrations would come to about 4 pages (3,000 words = 3 pages; plus 4 illustrations = 1 page).
- We are asking each chair to provide a written paper for the print issue, to provide some context and/or introduction for their topic area of discussion. Each chair should also solicit a couple of other texts to fill out the 8-10 pages per working group. Original texts are preferred, but papers that have been published may be considered on a case-by-case basis, especially if their original publication was not widely available. This group of texts can form a springboard for the working group as each group begins its work.
Overview of Leonardo
From their website:
- "Leonardo is many things -- first, it is the name of the Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (ISAST), which focuses on artists working with science- and technology-based media and which has been in publication for nearly 40 years. Leonardo is also a trademark of the not-for-profit organization the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology, and so is used in conjunction with all of our projects, including Leonardo Music Journal, our web site Leonardo On-Line, the web journal Leonardo Electronic Almanac, the Leonardo Book Series, the French Leonardo web site OLATS and the Leonardo Network, an international group of collaborating individuals and organizations with common goals and interests. Join and enjoy the benefits of becoming part of this dynamic community."
- Also, they are trying to modernize somewhat, but must maintain their foot in the academic journal field
- Each journal has a set design that a contracted design house does...
- So, for each issue, they (the editors here at SFAI) do the editorial work, and then ship this off to MITPRESS, who then does all the design. So, it is rare for others to get to do design work for this journal.
- premier academic journal dedicated to art+science and new media
- Everybody in the field knows Leonardo.
- Great opportunity to plug into the field.
- If you write, you should talk to them about future possibilities some time.
Overview of Pacific Rim New Media Summit
Taken from the website:
- "The political and economic space of the Pacific Rim represents a dynamic context for innovation and creativity. Experimentation in art, science, architecture, engineering, design, literature, theater and music is emerging new forms of cultural production and experience unique to the region. The complex relations and diversity of Pacific Rim nations is exemplified throughout the hybridized communities that comprise Silicon Valley.
- As the 10th largest city in the United States, San Jose is an important portal on the Eastern edge of the Pacific region, which shares deep historical and cultural connections that range from Latin America, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia to Asia. ZeroOne San Jose: An International Festival of Art on the Edge highlights the Pacific Rim as a central theme by presenting the most significant achievements in art, theory and research from throughout the region.
- The CADRE Laboratory for New Media at San Jose State University will host a two-day pre-symposium entitled the Pacific Rim New Media Summit co-sponsored by Leonardo. The Summit is intended to explore and build interpretive bridges between institutional, corporate, social and cultural enterprises with an emphasis on the emergence of new media arts programs in 7 areas: Creative Community, Curatorial, Education, Directory, Eco-Social Activism, Mobile Computing and Urbanity, and Latin American – Pacific / Asia New Media.
- Transvergent Evening is the official reception for the Pacific Rim New Media Summit. It is the first event of the Festival open to the public and includes a keynote presentation by a world-renowned scholar, a reception at the new City of San Jose/SJSU Martin Luther King Library, and a commissioned avant-garde music concert at a local night club. A special feature of the Pacific Rim theme is the Container Culture exhibition that will be featured on Cesar Chavez Plaza that will present new media artist projects from Pacific Rim port cities."

Research
Software
This is a partial list of tools. Of particular concern is the dvd authoring software as there are many complaints about apple's dvd studio pro. Please don't expect to be taught about these applications in tutorial fashion, as they are all quite easy to learn and fluidity between them is of the most concern.
