The IDEA is old one that I batted around for some time as a way to free all from the tyranny of proprietary color. Really, how can one company own color? Prior to LGM2009, myself and Jon Cruz, the fellow who named me rejon originally, developed the idea for an open swatchbook standard, through Jon's work developing the powerful color swatches in Inkscape. My interest in developing a color standard, that is part of open swatch book also powers both.

At this year's LGM2009, Ginger Coons gave a great presentation about the issues of FLOSS design apps from her heart and wanting to get more people involved. I grilled her pretty hard during her presentation because I don't think that advocacy for advocacy's sake works. Rather, I proposed that a real project must be selected so that it has real impact.

After looking at Ginger's site, I saw that she came to the conclusion that there needs to be an opencolor project as well. I wanted to make sure that her great energy as well became part of the Open Color project.

Thus, I think the path forward is to:

  • develop the technical specification more on openswatchbook, making sure opencolor integrates with it.
  • develop plan and strategy for both, where openswatchbook is the larger project, so that there is infrastructure to host swatches, and have a canonical url for each swatch and color.
    • a simple solution would be to use
