I'm investigating replacing Facebook. With all the hubbubb this week about Facebook changing their terms of service, this forces me to consider alternatives.

Building an Autonomo.us Federated Social Web: OStatus, Status.Net, Identi.ca and You

Abstract

This presentation looks at the current problem with relying upon singular closed walled-garden-like networks like Facbook or Twitter. It then provides a survey of solutions, and provides a route for Free and Open Source Software developers to collaborate and build something based in reality and not just a kickstarter fundraiser.

Millions of people around the world live out some portion of their social life on-line behind the walled gardens, Facebook and Twitter. With the rise of these addictive social network services, restrictive Terms of Service (Tos), closed source server software and Fake Open (aka, FauxPen) services with semi-documented APIs, users are left with an appealing level of connectedness with friends, but a burden in lack of connectivity between networks. Furthermore, as has been shown by Twitter acquiring its own clients such as Tweetie, Twitter and Facebook are not as concerned with the developer ecosystem as once thought. Hint: Third parties relying 100% upon one network are playing cards.

This presentation investigates problems with the current social web, and provides a matrix of solutions for building a federated social web based in reality. In fact, its already being constructed with the OStatus Protocol (http://ostatus.org), as completely implemented by Status.Net (the makers of Identi.ca), Cliqset, and to varying degrees by Wordpress, Google Buzz, and other platforms. Also, this presentation dissects Brazilian social networks and how more Free Software developers can help build a Federated Social Web that even Richard Stallman might endorse :)

OSCON Summit
