Last year, my friend Dave Neary and I used my buddy Mark Daggett's new project Pledgie to raise about 12,000 USD. This year, we are doing the same and I'm helping lead this along with others from around the free software-based graphics communities. The campaign http://pledgie.com/campaigns/2926 is starting and we need to spread the word like wildfire! We are trying to raise 15K USD by April 22 to support travel assistance to free and open source developers who often work for free, and work together while being spread all around the world.
