Media Exchange is a sharing event between artists who make contemporary work in media such as video, sound and Internet. The event consists of all levels of work, with emphasis on the participants helping each other build a stronger contemporary new media community in Guangzhou. As such, this event is a precursor for a continuous critical dialogue among young artists.

Participating core artists for the night include Deer Fang presenting various video projects; Jon Phillips, who will demo his major Open Source projects, Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) and Inkscape (www.inkscape.org); and, Zhu Jianhui, who will play live audio experiments. Please note, this is only a partial list of participants, as the point of this event is to encourage emerging artists and future collaborations.

“媒体互动交流” 是一次以影象，声音和网络为创作媒介的当代年轻艺术家之间的交流活动。以参与者之间互相促进而建立起广州当代新媒介群体为重点，这次活动将容纳各个层次的艺术作品，从而也将开辟未来年轻艺术家之间持续的对话与批评。

当晚参加的主要艺术家有方鹿，她将播放和她的影像作品；JON PHILLIPS，将讲解他主要的开放源作品：开放贴图图馆 Open Clip Art Library和Inkscape；和朱剑辉，将播放实验声音作品。

以上仅是此活动的部分参与者，我们的目的是鼓励更多的新艺术家参与其中和促进未来的合作。

Jon Phillips

Jon Phillips (www.rejon.org) is an open source developer, artist, writer, educator, lecturer, and curator with 12+ years of experience creating communities and working within computing culture. His involvements with mixing culture and software development have been shown internationally at the Desktop Developers Conference (2005), SFMoMA (2004), University of Tokyo (2004), Korea's KAIST (2004), UCLA Hammer Museum's Digital Storytelling Conference, UC-Berkeley's 040404 Conference (2004), USC Aim Festival IV (2003), and the ICA London (2002). He is a core Open Source developer advocate and developer on Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org), a scalable vector graphics editor and on the Open Clip Art Library (http://openclipart.org), and is writing/producing a book, "CVS: Concurrency, Versioning and Systems." Currently, he is visiting faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute (www.sfai.edu) in the Design+Technology department and is an Open Source developer for the Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org).

Deer Fang 方鹿

Deer Fang is an International performance video artist from southern China. Most recently her work has been shown at RX Gallery in San Francisco, The Rencontres Internationales Paris/ Berlin, Contemporary Artist Center's Juried Exhibition in Massachusetts and the Fringe Short Film Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. She completed her BFA at School of Visual Arts in New York in 2005, and will complete her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007 studying with Tony Labat and George Kuchar.


方鹿是一位中国南方出生的当代艺术家。她最近参加的展览包括三藩市RX画廊的RMX媒体试验之一，The Rencontres 2004 法国／柏林， 美国麻省当代艺术家中心的评审展览，和瑞典Gothenburg的Fringe短片电影节。她2005年i毕业于美国纽约视觉艺术学院艺术获学士学位，并将于2007年在美国三藩市艺术学院完成艺术硕士学位。 她的现任导师是Tony Labat 和George Kuchar.

广东佛山人，现为广州美术学院4年级学生。 一直热衷于艺术创作，尝试过平面，绘画，动画，录象以及装置等创作手法，04参加首届英国电影节之DV大赛，获一等奖并赴英国交流。05年与黄小鹏合作编辑广美当代艺术实验书籍《郁!!郁!!》。 曾参加展览2005年“未来考古学”第二届中国艺术三年展，第二届平遥国际摄影大展，第二届广州三年展

胡向前，出生于广东雷州，现就读于广州美术学院油画系第五工作室。平时从事于录象装置和行为艺术创作。参加展览有第二届中国三年展-在校实验。

湖南湘潭人。广州美术学院设计学院02级新媒介设计系02年开始学习电影，并接触影视广告的制作04年拍摄了第一部独立电影<<Infinity>> 其后陆续拍摄的独立作品有<<lost city>>, <<大学厂>>,<<墙>>，作品曾多次参加全国影象新生代大奖，珠三角影象展等各种影展，《书城》《NEWAY》都有报道，现主要从事独立电影的制作。

闫睿 Yan Rui 广州美术学院设计学院新媒介专业4年级学生。参加展览包括 2004年11月 DV作品《城市节拍》入围英国电影节DV大赛 2004参与设计＜光．运动．空间＞参加北京首届国际新媒体艺术大展的作品被中国科学技术馆永久收藏 2005年6月 装置艺术作品《表皮》入选参加第2届北京国际新媒体艺术展 并被苏州博物馆收藏 2005年参与 日本爱知世界博览会中国馆互动装置的实验工作

"The Plum in The Golden Vase 金瓶梅" by Deer Fang 方鹿

  • summary: Original novel The Plum in the Golden Vase (or Chin P'ing Mei) is a sixteenth-century Chinese novel. It had been one of the most infamous Chinese literature because of its erotic realism and the censorship upon it through centuries. The novel did not be banished but more versions of the book passed on. This video create another version of this censored book based on what is abruptly missing in the linear content. The different scenes that performed in my video related to particular part of the book that are fore play of what would be censored as the narrative goes. These scenes are not an complimentary of the missing gap, rather they are using the gap as a space to reinvent actions.

A Short Essay for Chen Sijia 给陈斯嘉的短文

问题：

1. 请简单介绍一下求学经历，以及两所美国院校的背景和申请留学的程序。

我从2001年离开到美国到现在是四年多的时间了。当初觉得我必须从大学开始彻底改变一下环境，因为那时侯觉得过去经历得太少了。同时我对外国的了解不多，也不存在一个设定的期望，我只是希望从环境迁移中来发展自己。所以出去以后我适应得很快，而且没有严重的思乡情绪，当中的困难和难以预料的事情也被我归入到必将经历的一部分。

我先到了美国东部的一个城市Baltimore，离纽约3个小时。然后因为大城市的吸引，我一年后转学到纽约，在纽约视觉艺术学院完成了本科。现在我在美国西岸的旧金山继续硕士课程。在这中间，选择一个适合的城市或地方远比选择学校来得重要。因为从两个方面，一是社会本身和所在的地方就是丰富的人文资源，二是如果希望在学校毕业后所做的事情与学校的知识发生联系，那就得尽可能在学校期间把社会活动融入其中。像纽约，旧金山一样的城市就为这两方面提供了很好的机会，特别是纽约，在那儿基本是我成熟的过程；旧金山，也是美国西岸主要的城市但相对比纽约小和安静，但周围人的氛围对我做作品很有帮助。两座学校的不同也主要从两个学校所在的城市来考虑。从学校本身来说，我现在在的旧金山艺术学院是一所 艺术为主的院校，过去在雕塑，绘画，实验电影和录象等方面都有很重要的历史, 它的政治气氛相对较重。现在新任的校长是Docummenta 11的策展人Okwui Enwezor。纽约的视觉艺术学校是比较商业性的学校，最大的系是本科的平面设计系，也是我那时所在的系。艺术系的研究生课程竞争也很激烈。

至于申请过程，如果是申报美国学校的话一切都可以在网上完成。现在网络就是一切，在上面可以搜索各种信息，和不同的人建立联系。我当时2001年从选择学校，递交申请到申请奖学金都是在网上完成的。

2. 请介绍所学的专业，以及它的课程设置，以及一些学校的学术活动。

我现在的系是“新流派（录象／行为）”。这个系是我们学校特有的，是从以前的电影系分出来的。其他的系是：绘画，版画，摄影，电影，雕塑和科技与设计；并有四个研究中心：公共学科，媒体文化，艺术＋科学，和语言文字与图像。各个专业可以上不同系的课，学生自己选课和选老师的自由度很大。每周有一次公开讲座，是由学校邀请的学校外的艺术家，理论家来学校；这保持了学校与社会的文化形态接轨。学校的展厅基本有学生负责，每学期由学生提交下一学期的展览计划，每周会有一个两到三人或艺术群体的展览开幕。

3. 请问在外国求学期间，最有感受的是什么？

美国的学校是一个可以让学生实现事情的地方，而且学生的自主自发能力也很高。学校与国内相比包容性与实时性更强，这一点对于当代艺术的发展犹为重要。在这里我看见我在美院的朋友，把学校里做的事情，和自己真正喜欢做的事情分开；这点说明学校信息的更新速度太慢，未有足够的知识结构来把新的作品形式归如到理论体系中，所以新的形式容易变成了冲突和被排斥的一部分。
