RELEASE is a media arts “release party” for an Open Source Software, Open Clip Art Library(www.openclipart.org) by JON PHILLIPS (www.rejon.org); a new album INTELLECT by DJ ZHU JIANHUI AKA DOUBLE FISH (www.reconfiguration-records.com); and, an art project THE UNIQUE DANCER by DEER FANG (www.deerfang.org). For more information please see www.mediaexperiment.org. This is Media Experiment #3.

Who

Jon Phillips

Jon Phillips (www.rejon.org) is an open source developer, artist, writer, educator, lecturer, and curator with 12+ years of experience creating communities and working within computing culture. His involvements with mixing culture and software development have been shown internationally at the Desktop Developers Conference (2005), SFMoMA (2004), University of Tokyo (2004), Korea's KAIST (2004), UCLA Hammer Museum's Digital Storytelling Conference, UC-Berkeley's 040404 Conference (2004), USC Aim Festival IV (2003), and the ICA London (2002). He is a core Open Source developer advocate and developer on Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org), a scalable vector graphics editor and on the Open Clip Art Library (http://openclipart.org), and is writing/producing a book, "CVS: Concurrency, Versioning and Systems." Currently, he is visiting faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute (www.sfai.edu) in the Design+Technology department and is an Open Source developer for the Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org).

Zhu Jianhui aka Double Fish

Zhu Jianhui, aka Double Fish (http://doublefishxx.topcities.com/), is a Chinese artist and musician whose work circulates Internationally. His interest in contemporary global culture, hacker aesthetics, and art shapes his practice. In addition to his music, Double Fish founded the independent record label, Reconfiguration Records (www.reconfiguration-records.com) and released the label's first compilation, "The Sound of Silence Project, including artists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Poland. In October 2005, electronic music label Bedzoo Records pressed Double Fish's first EP1 "inter net" while the Polish label, Audiotong, launched his EP2, "hackers." Other pieces are on the compilation "Shanshui Records Landscape 2" which contains the "Single Hackers (generation 2)." Similarly, the magazine "I Love Rock 'n Roll" enclosed his single, "z6," on volume 32 (2005) and "Experimental No. 1" on volume 15 (2004). Performances include "Improvisational Noiz Play" in Guangzhou, China (2005). More recently he performed "Mini MIDI" at the Beijing MIDI Festival and other solo material at the 3rd 2pi music festival in Hangzhou, China. Professionally, he is working with the director Caofei to compose music and sound effects for the "Pearl River Delta Hero" for the 2nd China Guangzhou Triennial (Nov 2005).

Deer Fang

Deer Fang is an International performance video artist from southern China. Most recently her work has been shown at RX Gallery in San Francisco, The Rencontres Internationales Paris/ Berlin, Contemporary Artist Center's Juried Exhibition in Massachusetts and the Fringe Short Film Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. She completed her BFA at School of Visual Arts in New York in 2005, and will complete her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007 studying with Tony Labat and George Kuchar.
