General Information

The Pacific Rim Media Salon

The Pacific Rim Media Salon is a gathering of all level of scholars, theorists, and artists who are interested in cultural issues of the Pacific Rim. Of primary importance are the participants of the event who will shape the type of discussion that ensues. Patrick Deegan and Jon Phillips will give short mini-talks about their research followed with drinks and discussion between all attendees, the primary focus of the salon.

Who 主要参与人

Patrick Deegan

Patrick W. Deegan is a candidate (PhC) in the Art History, Theory and Criticism program at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on new media art practice, sociology, and ethics, examining network communities and aesthetics as they intersect with, contribute to, subvert and parallel national and global technology trends. Presently he is in the field (Russia россия and China 中国) conducting initial research on the role and effect of information technologies in communities, academies, and corporations, as well as its impact on the numerous international art scenes. Patrick received his BA from the University of Iowa in Religion, and his MA from the University of California at Riverside in Art History. He is also an adjunct instructor at San Diego State University. Deegan has also served as a curatorial consultant at the California Museum of Photography and the Sweeney Art Gallery, and media curator for Groundworks. He is co-founder of Scale Journal.

Jon Phillips

Jon Phillips (www.rejon.org) is an open source developer, artist, writer, educator, lecturer, and curator with 12+ years of experience creating communities and working within computing culture. His involvements with mixing culture and software development have been shown internationally at the Desktop Developers Conference (2005), SFMoMA (2004), University of Tokyo (2004), Korea's KAIST (2004), UCLA Hammer Museum's Digital Storytelling Conference, UC-Berkeley's 040404 Conference (2004), USC Aim Festival IV (2003), and the ICA London (2002). He is a core Open Source developer advocate and developer on Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org), a scalable vector graphics editor and on the Open Clip Art Library (http://openclipart.org), and is writing/producing a book, "CVS: Concurrency, Versioning and Systems." Currently, he is visiting faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute (www.sfai.edu) in the Design+Technology department and is an Open Source developer for the Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org).

Deer Fang

Deer Fang is an International performance video artist from southern China. Most recently her work has been shown at RX Gallery in San Francisco, The Rencontres Internationales Paris/ Berlin, Contemporary Artist Center's Juried Exhibition in Massachusetts and the Fringe Short Film Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. She completed her BFA at School of Visual Arts in New York in 2005, and will complete her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007 studying with Tony Labat and George Kuchar.
