Digital Media Archive

They want to digitize all the library archives, slides, movies and serve it up online. I thought we could gain some insight on how the CC handles their media store, both technically and philosophically.

Design + Technology Workshops

The general concept is to offer small 1-credit initial co-requisite classes. There are six component areas that map to different media:

  • image
  • web
  • motion
  • sound
  • interactive
  • object/physical

These courses are small 1 credit unit, 2 week intensive classes that are to be offered at the same time that a course that requires a corequisite is offered. Also, these classes are to be offered during breaks and intensive sessions.

If one is already proficient in these areas, then there are standardized tests to be offered for one to test out of the co-requisite.

Another possibility for these skill-based workshops is to divide this up into two semester-long courses that can be taught year round. Although, the 1 credit unit is ideal as the synthesis of having synchronous skill and conceptual courses (the bulk of a students training) is more important than semester-long pure-skill-based courses. The process of learning is what is important and is why the shorter skill-based initial corequisites is important.

Questions

  • Who will teach theses courses?
  • Will the school allow these courses?
  • Who will develop the standardized skill sets necessary for these six areas?
  • Are these six areas inclusive enough for the broad set of skills necessary in a design + technology program?

Semester-Style

  • Need a light curriculum
  • One teacher for each semester
  • required for design+technology majors their first year
  • If someone is proficient, they may test out of

Workshops I: Image, Web, Interaction

Workshops II: Sound, Motion, Object

Design + Technology Curriculum

Core Curriculum

Introduction to Design + Technology

This would be a course focused on introduction to design + technology art practice.

History of Design + Technology

This would be a course dedicated to the history and tehroy of design and technology.

Systems of Representation

This course would study various linguistics issues and how that relates to contemporary society and art.

Design + Technology Workshops

This is already mentioned in the section above.

Studio Practice

These courses are the more traditiona SFAI classes that focus on specific topical concerns explored through the lense of the class along with student's studio-based practice.
